An unexpected welcome: President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, accompanied by high-profile Republicans like House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (LA) and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA), arrived at Nationals Park just before the game started. Trump did not receive a warm welcome as fans booed and chanted “lock him up” as the president was shown waving and applauding on the National Park videoboard.
Nationals manager Dave Martinez revealed during a press conference that Trump will be attending the game: “He’s coming to the game. He’s a fan. Hopefully, he cheers for the Washington Nationals, and I hope he enjoys the game.”
Asked if the Nationals wanted the president there, Martinez said: “We haven’t really talked about it. We’re focusing on playing baseball.”
Trump attended the game hours after announcing that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a raid by U.S. Special Forces.
